Coffee Benefits for Great Skin Care

Coffee to Wake Up Your Skin

goblet-of-coffee-1567990

If you are anything like me, you are in LOVE with coffee.  Coffee is a main staple for my day.  I drink it with just a tad bit of cream and a little bit of natural sweetener.   I also use it to give my skin an extra health kick.  Yes, I did say I use it on my skin.

Caffeine in skincare products is not a new idea.  Cosmetic Companies have been using it for a very long time.  However, most people are unaware of just how wonderful caffeine is for the health of their skin.    Incorporating caffeine into your skincare routine can produce some awesome benefits such as even toned and smooth skin.  Who does not want that?

Coffee protects the skin

Some of the things I hear people complain about when they examine their skin are the appearance of wrinkles, sun spots or loss of elasticity.  Unwanted changes to the skin such as these are most times caused by free radicals which causes premature skin aging.  Coffee is one of the best defenses against free radicals because of the antioxidants contained in it.  Antioxidants will attach free radicals and eliminate them from the skin.  This alone will improve the overall look of the skin. So if you are noticing some maturity of the skin, fight back with some sweet smelling coffee.

Coffee Reduces swelling and puffiness

When caffeine is applied topically to skin wondrous things can happen.  Caffeine constricts blood vessels and help to reduce swelling and puffiness.  Because of this great effect, it is recommended to use eye creams that list caffeine as an active ingredient.

Coffee combats those under eye dark circles

I must begin this section with some hard facts.  Caffeine cannot cure hereditary dark circles.  Under eye dark circles resulting from things like dehydration, allergies, and lack of sleep can be affected by caffeine due its anti-inflammatory properties.  Caffeine reduces that accumulation of blood under the eye which contributes to dark shadows.  If you have an eye cream that was created to erase dark circles, it is my opinion that this product must contain caffeine to be effective.

Coffee helps to reduce cellulite

Yes I said it!  Coffee helps reduce cellulite.  Caffeine can dehydrate fatty cells.  The dehydration results in water disappearing for the surface of your skin, which can minimize the appearance of cellulite and provide you with smoother skin.

Research at the University of Sao Paulo has proven that the application of skin cream containing caffeine reduced the size of cellulite fat cells by 17%. So slather that cream, butter and scrubs on to your skin and bring back the skin of your youth.

Kayorcee Creations carry a variety of products that has caffeine as its active ingredient.  You can find Coffee Scrubs, Under Eye Cream, Coffee Butter, and Exfoliating soaps with coffee grounds in our web-store.

Know How To Handle Your Hair Type

Curly Gurl

Healthy Hair is my goal when I create products in my hair care line. I wanted to provide products that would repair, and maintain healthy hair. For that reason I looked to nature. I have added herbal infusions to our natural hair care products that provide benefits that cannot be matched.

With hair there is no one size fits all formula.  My hair care system was created to address different hair types.

Fair Maden

Oily Hair

Over productive sebaceous glands are the culprits when it comes to oily hair.  We have sebaceous glands that secrete a substance called sebum which helps to lubricate our skin and scalp.  This natural oil, sebum, is essential for a well hydrated scalp with leads to healthy hair.  However, when the sebaceous gland produces more sebum than what is required to hydrate, we tend to get limp and unruly hair.

It has been my experience that when oily hair presents itself the first thing a person does is reach for a deep cleansing shampoos that dries out the hair.  This is the absolute wrong thing to do.  These types of shampoos strip the scalp and hair of natural oils which is needed for healthy hair.  We have to remember the body is an awesome thing which self regulates.  This drying and stripping process sends a message to the body that more sebum is required; so in fact, this process has made the oily problem worse.

Kayorcee Creations formulated hair products to address oily hair. These products were created to promote healthy hair and clean scalp without stripping the natural oils.  I added citrus essential oils to these products because citrus helps to balance oils.  In addition to citrus essential oil, these products also have natural herbs, such as strawberry leaf, lemongrass, and white willow bar, which will promote the health of the hair and scalp.

Dry Hair

Dry hair and skin is a result of an under productive sebaceous gland.  Because the gland is not producing enough sebum, dry hair will be brittle, dull and have a straw-like texture.  There are many reasons why hair becomes dry.  Some are attributed to genetics and others are attributed to you and how you care for your hair.  Genetics can’t be altered.  You have to deal with what you were given.  However, if your hair care and styling regime is causing dryness, you should immediately rectify and alter your hair care system.  Here are some very common problems that are attributed to dry hair:

  • Excessive washing
  • Chemical detergent-based cleansers
  • Alcohol-based styling products
  • Chemical over processing
  • Excessive heat application
  • Exposure to sun, wind and chemically treated pools
  • Poor Nutrition

Kayorcee Creations formulated hair products to address dry hair. Our shampoo bars are superfatted at a higher percentage than our other shampoo bars so that there will be extra unsapontified oils left on the hair and scalp that will help to hydrate and moisturize.  I have also added herbs, such as elederflower, flaxseed and comfrey root, to these products to increase moisture, hydration and shine to dry hair and scalp.

dandruff

Dandruff /Inflamed Scalp

Dandruff is somewhat of an anomaly.  There is no clear and well supported theory out there that addresses the issue of why dandruff occurs.  Nevertheless, it is very important that you do not confuse dry scalp with dandruff.  The two are simply not the same.  Dry scalp is a result of a lack of moisture.  This can result in itching and small dry powdery flakes which are mistaken for dandruff.  Using products that are meant to address the problem of dryness will eliminate these symptoms.  Using chemical products labeled as anti-dandruff and anti-flaking has been known to exacerbate the issue of itching and flaking due to the application of chemicals on top of an already inflamed scalp.

A normal scalp will sloth off old skin cell while making new skin cells to replace them.  This is a very normal process.  However, when a scalp has dandruff, the dead cells start to shed at an excessive rate causing clumps which are large enough to be seen by the naked eye. Those are the embarrassing flakes that you want to avoid.  This is not dry scalp.  This is a form of seborrheic dermatitis.  People with oily scalp also suffer from this issue, so we know that this issue is not an issue of simple dry scalp.  Dandruff is often times more present during the winter and milder during the summer.

No matter if you have dry scalp or dandruff due to seborrheic dermatitis it is very important that you use a very mild shampoo that will not exacerbate your scalp issue.  Detergent-based shampoos will clean the hair and scalp, but they well also cause more dryness.  This will only make the problem worse.

A Kayorcee Creations hair product that is formulated for dandruff/inflamed scalp was created to promote healthy hair and scalp.  Our products are intended for scalp health that will also cleanse and condition the hair.  I added herbs, such as birch bar, lavender and peppermint, to promote the health of the scalp which will alleviate issues cause by dandruff and inflamed scalp.

Benefits of Shea Butter

Sometimes when I am strolling through the store, I get so excited when I see a product that prominently displays Shea Butter as one of its ingredients.  Why such excitement?  Because Shea Butter is the TRUTH for health skin.  I say this because I know what it can do.  But there are some people, and you might be one of those people (no shame), who pick up a product with Shea Butter in it because they HEARD  it was a great ingredient, but do they really know how great it is.  I’m not sure, so I decided to share with you why I think it  is great.

Shea Butter is a Full Body Ingredient

This emollient can be used on every portion of your body and can be incorporated in so many products.

Skin Benefits

Where do I start?  I’ll just give you a list of its amazing benefits.

  • Wrinkles, fine lines and scars repairing
  • Antioxidant
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Deeply moisturizing
  • Stimulating for the superficial microcirculation
  • Skin strengthening
  • Skin protecting
  • UV protecting
  • Skin regenerating

  • Minor cuts and burns healing
  • Muscle ache healing
  • Physical endurance enhancer

Hair Benefits

Some people buy a chunk of shea butter lob off a piece and apply it to their hair.  This is a great use of Shea Butter IF you do some other things to your hair first.

Shea butter is NOT a conditioner.  Shea Butter is a moisture sealant.  It should not be used alone or on dry hair.  Shea butter used incorrectly on the hair can make the hair brittle and break.  A definite NO NO!!!!!  Moisture is required with the use of Shea butter.  The butter will lock in the moisture and help protect the hair.

Shea butter comes in different grades, that is why you will see this ingredient’s price vary from one seller to the next.  Try to get the highest quality you can afford for the greatest benefit.

If you can, get your shea butter with a mixture of ingredients that will benefit your hair.  Other oils like, Sweet Almond, Avocado, Grapeseed and Coconut are excellent to mix with Shea butter.

How do you get great skin or maintain the great skin you were born with?

This question can sometimes feel like you are asking someone where to find the Holy Grail.   People who actually talk about their skin usually start the conversation pointing out areas where they have problems.  Some people go for years with skin issues choosing just to ignore it.  While others off load tons of money buying product after product trying to achieve that movie-star-glow.  I have watched the interaction between women when issues of skin come up.  These conversations frustrate me to no end.  The women with beautiful skin just smile and take on the complements.  They shrug their shoulders when asked, “What’s your secret?”  Sometime they give an answer that is so insufficient that, in my estimation, they could have said nothing and it would have been a far better answer.  Others give a polite answer stating “I really don’t do much to my skin, but thank you.”  Well, that might be true, and if it is, I say to that woman, “Girl, you have hit the mother load.”  But for the rest of us, we need and want answers.  How do we take care of our skin so that we too can have healthy radiant skin?

 Here is the secret!

I believe that there are essentially 4 basic steps to achieving great skin, and 1 or 2 other steps to really push your results to the max.  Taking these steps for some will show results over night, but for others it will take time for your skin to show the benefits of your efforts.

Step 1:  Identify and embrace your skin type and skin issues

Oily skin

Although this type of skin may be problematic from time to time, you have no idea how lucky you are to have skin that produces oil.  One great benefit is when you age, and we all do, those fine lines and wrinkles will, for some, take years and years to appear, and, for others, they may only appear upon very close inspection.

But how do you take care of the problem now?

Oily skin is the result of an overactive sebaceous gland that produces too much sebum.  Sebum is good; you don’t want to eradicate it.  You want to control it.  Products that dry out the skin will only make your problem worse.  It will trigger you skin to produce more sebum.  Talk about a vicious circle.  Stay away from harsh detergents and alcohols.  You will want to use natural products that will help to clean and balance skin oils.

Dry skin

Dry skin is the exact opposite of oily skin… But I didn’t have to tell you that.  Dry skin does not produce enough sebum to create that protective layer on the skin which traps in moisture.  Skin that is dry will tend to feel tight, flaky and show signs of aging.

How do you take care of this problem?

Like with oily skin, you should stay away from harsh detergents and alcohols.  This will only serve to dry your skin further.  Who wants that?  People with dry skin tend to benefit from products with butters in it such as Shea butter, mango butter and cocoa butter to mention just a few.  These butters help to create that barrier that is missing, due to the under production of sebum, which help retain moisture to the skin.  In addition to butters, products made with milk, such as goat milk and coconut milk, are also very good for people with dry skin.

Acne-Prone skin

Whether you are a teenager with acne or you suffer for adult onset acne the situation is still the same, the problem is bothersome and sometimes embarrassing.

How do you take care of this problem?

There are a host of products on the market that deals with acne-prone skin.  Some are a hit, and some are a miss.  However, when dealing with acne-prone skin, products with salicylic acid in them will help to clear up acne sores.  Gentle cleansing is also a good practice.  Try to only use your hands when cleansing your face.  Wash clothes and sponges only serve to cause more irritation to an irritated surface.  When choosing a moisturizer, chose one that is light and specifically constructed to deal with your skin issues.

These are just a few skin types, but you should identify your own and then accept and embrace it for change.

Step 2:  Cleanse your skin

Once you know what type of skin you are dealing with, you can identify the proper soap that will cleanse and hydrate your skin. I don’t believe that there is one cleanser that will help all skin types.  Get to know your skin so you can provide it with what it needs.  Cleansers come in all different shapes and sizes: bars, creams, liquids, or foams.  The medium your cleaner comes in is really up to your preference.  The main key is that you cleanse on a daily basis.  You would be surprised at the amount of impurities and toxins exposed to skin.  Allowing these unwanted hitchhikers, to take up residence in your pores is simply a mistake that will cost you the health of your skin.

Step 3:  Use a toner

This step is overlooked more frequently than any other step in a skin care regimen.  However, I believe that this step is just as important as any other step.  Toners are the gatekeeper to skin health.  After cleansing the skin, the process opens your skin’s pores, but it does not close the pores when you are done.  In additionthere still may be some dirt and residue left on the skin that your soap has not removed.  Using a toner after cleansing solves both of these problems.  Toner helps to remove the deep down dirt, and it also closes the pores preventing additional dirt from getting in.  There are many types of toners and knowing your skin type will help you to choose the best one.

Step 4:  Moisturize

Bringing moisture back to the skin after it has been cleansed is very important and essentially the finishing touch.  But be careful when choosing which moisturizer you use.  This is probably the most important part of your regimen that requires you to really know what your skin type is.  If you have oily skin and you use a heavy moisturizer, you have just created an oil slick on the surface of your skin.  If you have dry skin, and you use a moisturizer that has clay in it which absorbs oil, your face will feel like a desert.  There is an ongoing debate on whether people with acne-prone skin should use use a moisturizer.  Well my 2 cents on that is, yes you should.  However, it must be the right one and it may not be needed on a daily basis, but it is needed.  I love herbal moisturizers for the skin because of all the healing properties it provides.  The right creation and combination can help with just about any skin issue or skin type.

Well, those are the 4 steps that I believe are the secret to healthy skin

 HOWEVER…

I did mention that there are some additional steps that can really boost the health of your skin to the status of Glowing and Radiant.  Those steps we will discuss in a future blog post, but to give you a little preview, we will talk about:

Milk Does a Body… And Your Skin … Good

Milk is simply amazing.  As children we were always told by adults to drink our milk so that we could have healthy teeth and bones.  However, no one ever tells children to bathe in milk or to slather it all over their faces.  LOL…  Well, I ask the question, WHY NOT?  Milk is fantastic for the skin.

Why is milk good for the skin?

Milk helps to moisturize your skin.  The fat and protein found in whole milk helps to hydrate the skin. It also helps the skin retain moisture.  Can you use skim milk for this process?  Well you can use whatever you like, but you won’t get the same benefits that you would from whole milk.  It’s the fat in the milk that counts.  Skim or even low percentage fat milk just won’t cut it for the type of benefits you are looking for.

Another benefit of using milk is exfoliation.  This results from taking a bath in milk.  YES!  I said take a bath in it.  Milk baths has been in skin regiments of the elite for years and years.  Cleopatra would travel with live stock so that she could have her milk baths on a regular basis.  Milk baths help to produce radiant youthful skin.  How does this work?  Milk has lactic acid in it.   When you soak in milk the lactic acid works like a glue remover.  It breaks down the bonds that adhere old skin to new skin.  Soaking in milk for 10 to 15 mins allow that adhesion to loosen up so that the old skin can be easily removed with a wipe of a wash cloth.  NO scrubbing or polishing of the skin needed.  Milk is just that good.  When you get out of your bath, you will have new skin as if you were just reborn.  How exciting!

Natural Additives for Natural Products

Have you ever picked up one of your products and read the list of ingredients?  This one exercise can be one of enlightenment, and, in some cases, one of confusion.  Over the next couple of weeks, I will try to address ingredients you might find in your natural products.  It will be impossible for me to address all the ingredients in commercial products that aren’t carrying the banner of being natural, so I will simply stay away from those items.

Natural additives are the cornerstone of  Kayorcee Creations’ natural products.   Kayorcee Creations uses natural additives in just about all of our natural products including our soaps, bath items and hair care products.  Now be assured, these additives are there for a reason.  All of these reasons will be explained.  The philosophy of our company is to educate, enlighten and finally to provide you with the best products for your specific needs.  Here are some of the ingredients we will spend some time talking about.

Choosing a Candle: Soy vs Paraffin Wax

Everyone loves a nice, long lasting, fragrance permeating throughout his or her environment.  With so many candle choices on the market and so many fragrances to choose from, you can get really confused on what you are getting.  There are so many factors to consider.

Fragrance

Scent choice is probably the most important and considered information when selecting a candle.  Watching a customer pick up a candle and lifted it to their nose and taking a deep breath is, for me, the most entertaining while watching a customer shop.  Their expression on their faces tells so much.  It ranges for delight to disgust, but when they find the scent of choice for them the consideration on the purchase is done.  However, there is still more information to be gathered that the customer has over looked.

Cold Throw -vs- Hot Throw

When the customer takes the first whiff of the candle what they are experiencing is what candlers call the cold throw.  A cold throw is the scent that the customer is getting when the candle is not lit.  This scent should indicate to the customer what they could expect when the candle is lit.  The strength of the cold throw is on one hand important, but on the other hand it shouldn’t be the only thing considered.  With a Kayorcee Creation Natural Soy Candle, there is a very nice cold throw but it isn’t one that is deceptive.  When I say deceptive, I mean that the flash of fragrance from the cold throw isn’t the strongest scent from our candle.  The scent in a Kayorcee Creation Natural Soy Candle is bonded with the soy wax prior to it being poured into its container.  That means that the scent is fully incorporated and when the candle is burned the melted wax will release even more scent.  This is called the hot throw.  I believe that a candle should release scent from the first burn until the last burn.  This can only happen if the scent has been properly bonded with the wax.  So, I say all of that to say this, there is a tie when it comes to Cold Throw -vs- Hot Throw.  Both need to be present for the life of the candle.

Candle Waxes

Candle waxes are being more and more considered by the consumer.  As the consumer becomes more educated on what their products are made of and from, candle makers have to be more conscious on why they have chosen to use the particular wax that they have chosen.  Kayorcee Creations have done just that when I choose to only use natural soy wax in our candle products.  There are definite benefits to using soy wax, but I would be remised if I were to overlook some of the down sides to using exclusively natural soy  wax.  In order to see both sides of the issue lets look at the most popular wax in candle making first.

Paraffin Wax

Paraffin wax is certainly one of he most popularly used waxes on the market.  It is made from a petroleum-based product derived from crude oil during the refinement stages of making gasoline.  There are two types of Paraffin wax used: Low melting and High melting.  Low melting paraffin wax will melt at a temperature lower than 130 degrees F.  This wax is soft and is used in making container candles and tea lights.  High melting paraffin wax melts at a temperature over 130 degrees F.  This type of wax is harder and is used for non-container candles.  One of the upsides of using Paraffin wax is that when it cools it presents very nice in appearance.  There is no frosting on the candle that sometimes results for natural waxes.

Soy Wax

Soy Wax is a vegetable wax that is made from the oil of soybeans.  One of the benefits of soy wax is that it is completely renewable.  Unlike Paraffin wax, which is derived from oil, that has a reserve cap on it.  When we have exhausted is origin it is gone.  Soy wax is sustainable because its availability depends completely on how much we grow, and we can keep growing it indefinitely. In addition, to the wonderful properties of its sustainability, a well made soy candle will burn cleanly and slowly.  Who doesn’t like that?  No dirty emission in your atmosphere and you get the most for you money.  These are the very reasons whey I have choose to exclusively use natural wax for all of Kayorcee Creations Candles and soy wax melts.  Soy wax is eco-friendly, renewable, sustainable and carbon neutral.  In addition, I only buy soy wax that is American grown.  The down side to the wax that I choose to work with is that, unlike Paraffin wax, it does have some frosting that appears on the candle.  However, the scent throw, both cold and hot, is amazing.  I figure a little frosting is the price for an amazingly fragrant and natural candle.

Who Wins? Paraffin -vs- Soy

Kayorcee Creations will provide you the finest quality natural soy wax candle should you chose to align with soy.  However, if you choose to align with Paraffin, I’m sure you will have no problems finding a beautiful candle of your chosen.  As with everything, the choice is yours.

Kayorcee Creations Natural Handcrafted Soaps and their ingredients

Natural soap is a treat for the skin that can only truly be appreciated upon use, touch and smell.  There are so may factors that go into the making of a natural bar of soap.  The crafts person should have a particular goal for creating the soap with the ingredients used.  I have tried many different recipes for my soaps for many different reasons and result producing treatments for the skin.  However, I have created a basic recipe that all of my soaps start with.  I have chosen these ingredients for the benefits they impart to the soap as well as to your skin.

Ingredients:

Coconut oil

This oil is very beneficial in making soap.  It is the back bone in the cleansing department.  It will provide the clean feeling that you want from a bar of soap.  In addition, it also help to create lather.  Everyone like lots of bubbles in their soap.  A low lathering soap is a real disappointment to most people.  With the right amount of coconut oil lather will be up front and center.  Finally, coconut oils make for a hard bar of soap.  Although this isn’t as beneficial to the skin, it is definitely beneficial to the wallet.  A hard bar of soap will last longer and provide for more number of baths and showers before reinvesting.

Olive Oil

This oil is one of the most common oils used in soap making.  Castile soap is make completely of olive oil and is a great soap.  There are many qualities to Olive oil that I like for my soaps.  Olive oil I thought to help with skin cell regeneration.  It is also acts like a humectant by drawing moisture from the air to the skin.  It also act as a sealant for the skin by holding in the moisture with out clogging the skin’s pores.  Olive oil also help to produce a conditioning stable later.  Lastly, Olive oil is mild and very good for sensitive skin.

Palm Oil

This oil is yet another ingredient that contributes to the hardness and lathering ability of the soap.  In addition, palm oil is a natural anti-oxidant which is incredibly beneficial to skin health.

Castor Oil

This oil act as a humectant by drawing moisture from the air and in to the skin.  Castor oil is easily absorbed in to the skin which softens and conditions the skin layers .

These four ingredients are the base for each of our soaps.  Of course we put some extra love into each bar to make sure it is Kayorcee Creation ready for the people we care most about, our customers, family and friends.

Kayorcee Creations and Our Natural Philosophy

Kayorcee Creations was created out of sheer necessity.  About 10 years ago, due to an illness, I started thinking about the things in my environment as they personally related to me and my family.  I specifically mention the pure selfishness of this thought process, because it’s true.  I was not an eco-friendly world citizen.  Recycle?  That word had no meaning to me at the time.  Chemical free products?  I waved that off with a flip of my wrist indicating my thought process on the subject was done.  Yes, I was indeed flippant with regard to the subject of natural living.  However, as I mentioned, when I became ill with a respiratory infection from over-cleaning my house, my whole outlook on the issue changed drastically.

I am not a middle of the road type of person.  I have nothing against this type of living, but I know I don’t fall into this category.  If I am going to do something, I am going to do it big, or at least I will try.  I made the decision that my house was going to be a chemical free zone.   Well… as much as I could make it chemical free.  I immediately threw away all of my cleaning products and embraced a more natural way of cleaning my home.  Vinegar was a miracle worker.  It didn’t smell as good as my other products, but that was the cost of my new life change.  Once I had a nice grasp on how to clean my home without chemicals, I started thinking about how my family and I were cleaning our bodies.

Growing up, as well as in my adult life, I had suffered with skin irritations, dryness and those pesky facial blackheads and blemishes.  I never had a full blown skin diagnosis, but it was still a problem for me.  As I watched my children grown, I noticed that they too had these issues with their skin.  My son’s skin, which is a nice milk chocolate brown, was often a gray color due to the amount of ash on just about his entire body.  Lotion was just a temporary fix that typically didn’t last more than 2 or 3 hours.  My next recourse was to slather petroleum jelly on his body.  He hated that, but that was what I knew to do at the time.  My daughter’s and my husband’s skin was not that much better than my son’s skin.  In retrospect, I feel foolish for not recognizing the problem that we were all suffering from.  But we are past that now, due to my new found relationship with the natural.

As I stated earlier, I am not a middle of the road type of person and my entry into the natural beauty realm is event of this.  I knew we had to get rid of the things that we were using to clean our bodies, but I knew if I threw out all of our hygiene products my family would revolt against me.  This time I had to take things a little bit slower.  I started making all of our products a little at a time.  All of us started seeing results almost instantly.  Our skin wasn’t nearly as dry and the use of lotion, although very much present from simple habit, was scaled down dramatically.  I no longer worried about my son being teased during gym class because of his chalky white legs.  I was getting so many complements on my skin that I start giving the stuff away to my friends and family.  Then they started making requests and offering me money for what I thought had no value except to my family and I.

Being in the natural beauty business has been so  much fun and rewarding.  I love seeing the changes in my customers skin after they try their first bottle of natural lotion or first bar of handcrafted soap.  I have embraced my business, but to be honest it is hard to look at Kayorcee Creations as simply a business because I am having the time of my life.

Kayorcee Creation’s motto is “Naturally Beautiful”.  I choose this motto because I have never felt more beautiful in my life, and I know it is thanks to natural products.
