Benefits of Shea Butter

Sometimes when I am strolling through the store, I get so excited when I see a product that prominently displays Shea Butter as one of its ingredients.  Why such excitement?  Because Shea Butter is the TRUTH for health skin.  I say this because I know what it can do.  But there are some people, and you might be one of those people (no shame), who pick up a product with Shea Butter in it because they HEARD  it was a great ingredient, but do they really know how great it is.  I’m not sure, so I decided to share with you why I think it  is great.

Shea Butter is a Full Body Ingredient

This emollient can be used on every portion of your body and can be incorporated in so many products.

Skin Benefits

Where do I start?  I’ll just give you a list of its amazing benefits.

  • Wrinkles, fine lines and scars repairing
  • Antioxidant
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Deeply moisturizing
  • Stimulating for the superficial microcirculation
  • Skin strengthening
  • Skin protecting
  • UV protecting
  • Skin regenerating
  • Collagen production stimulating (makes the skin stronger, more supple and younger)
  • Minor cuts and burns healing
  • Muscle ache healing
  • Physical endurance enhancer

Hair Benefits

Some people buy a chunk of shea butter lob off a piece and apply it to their hair.  This is a great use of Shea Butter IF you do some other things to your hair first.

Shea butter is NOT a conditioner.  Shea Butter is a moisture sealant.  It should not be used alone or on dry hair.  Shea butter used incorrectly on the hair can make the hair brittle and break.  A definite NO NO!!!!!  Moisture is required with the use of Shea butter.  The butter will lock in the moisture and help protect the hair.

Shea butter comes in different grades, that is why you will see this ingredient’s price vary from one seller to the next.  Try to get the highest quality you can afford for the greatest benefit.

If you can, get your shea butter with a mixture of ingredients that will benefit your hair.  Other oils like, Sweet Almond, Avocado, Grapeseed and Coconut are excellent to mix with Shea butter.

Milk Does a Body… And Your Skin … Good

Milk is simply amazing.  As children we were always told by adults to drink our milk so that we could have healthy teeth and bones.  However, no one ever tells children to bathe in milk or to slather it all over their faces.  LOL…  Well, I ask the question, WHY NOT?  Milk is fantastic for the skin.

Why is milk good for the skin?

Milk helps to moisturize your skin.  The fat and protein found in whole milk helps to hydrate the skin. It also helps the skin retain moisture.  Can you use skim milk for this process?  Well you can use whatever you like, but you won’t get the same benefits that you would from whole milk.  It’s the fat in the milk that counts.  Skim or even low percentage fat milk just won’t cut it for the type of benefits you are looking for.

Another benefit of using milk is exfoliation.  This results from taking a bath in milk.  YES!  I said take a bath in it.  Milk baths has been in skin regiments of the elite for years and years.  Cleopatra would travel with live stock so that she could have her milk baths on a regular basis.  Milk baths help to produce radiant youthful skin.  How does this work?  Milk has lactic acid in it.   When you soak in milk the lactic acid works like a glue remover.  It breaks down the bonds that adhere old skin to new skin.  Soaking in milk for 10 to 15 mins allow that adhesion to loosen up so that the old skin can be easily removed with a wipe of a wash cloth.  NO scrubbing or polishing of the skin needed.  Milk is just that good.  When you get out of your bath, you will have new skin as if you were just reborn.  How exciting!

Choosing a Candle: Soy vs Paraffin Wax

Everyone loves a nice, long lasting, fragrance permeating throughout his or her environment.  With so many candle choices on the market and so many fragrances to choose from, you can get really confused on what you are getting.  There are so many factors to consider.

Scent choice is probably the most important and considered information when selecting a candle.  Watching a customer pick up a candle and lifted it to their nose and taking a deep breath is, for me, the most entertaining while watching a customer shop.  Their expression on their faces tells so much.  It ranges for delight to disgust, but when they find the scent of choice for them the consideration on the purchase is done.  However, there is still more information to be gathered that the customer has over looked.

Cold Throw -vs- Hot Throw

When the customer takes the first whiff of the candle what they are experiencing is what candlers call the cold throw.  A cold throw is the scent that the customer is getting when the candle is not lit.  This scent should indicate to the customer what they could expect when the candle is lit.  The strength of the cold throw is on one hand important, but on the other hand it shouldn’t be the only thing considered.  With a Kayorcee Creation Natural Soy Candle, there is a very nice cold throw but it isn’t one that is deceptive.  When I say deceptive, I mean that the flash of fragrance from the cold throw isn’t the strongest scent from our candle.  The scent in a Kayorcee Creation Natural Soy Candle is bonded with the soy wax prior to it being poured into its container.  That means that the scent is fully incorporated and when the candle is burned the melted wax will release even more scent.  This is called the hot throw.  I believe that a candle should release scent from the first burn until the last burn.  This can only happen if the scent has been properly bonded with the wax.  So, I say all of that to say this, there is a tie when it comes to Cold Throw -vs- Hot Throw.  Both need to be present for the life of the candle.

Candle Waxes

Candle waxes are being more and more considered by the consumer.  As the consumer becomes more educated on what their products are made of and from, candle makers have to be more conscious on why they have chosen to use the particular wax that they have chosen.  Kayorcee Creations have done just that when I choose to only use natural soy wax in our candle products.  There are definite benefits to using soy wax, but I would be remised if I were to overlook some of the down sides to using exclusively natural soy  wax.  In order to see both sides of the issue lets look at the most popular wax in candle making first.

Paraffin Wax

Paraffin wax is certainly one of he most popularly used waxes on the market.  It is made from a petroleum-based product derived from crude oil during the refinement stages of making gasoline.  There are two types of Paraffin wax used: Low melting and High melting.  Low melting paraffin wax will melt at a temperature lower than 130 degrees F.  This wax is soft and is used in making container candles and tea lights.  High melting paraffin wax melts at a temperature over 130 degrees F.  This type of wax is harder and is used for non-container candles.  One of the upsides of using Paraffin wax is that when it cools it presents very nice in appearance.  There is no frosting on the candle that sometimes results for natural waxes.

Soy Wax

Soy Wax is a vegetable wax that is made from the oil of soybeans.  One of the benefits of soy wax is that it is completely renewable.  Unlike Paraffin wax, which is derived from oil, that has a reserve cap on it.  When we have exhausted is origin it is gone.  Soy wax is sustainable because its availability depends completely on how much we grow, and we can keep growing it indefinitely. In addition, to the wonderful properties of its sustainability, a well made soy candle will burn cleanly and slowly.  Who doesn’t like that?  No dirty emission in your atmosphere and you get the most for you money.  These are the very reasons whey I have choose to exclusively use natural wax for all of Kayorcee Creations Candles and soy wax melts.  Soy wax is eco-friendly, renewable, sustainable and carbon neutral.  In addition, I only buy soy wax that is American grown.  The down side to the wax that I choose to work with is that, unlike Paraffin wax, it does have some frosting that appears on the candle.  However, the scent throw, both cold and hot, is amazing.  I figure a little frosting is the price for an amazingly fragrant and natural candle.

Who Wins? Paraffin -vs- Soy

Kayorcee Creations will provide you the finest quality natural soy wax candle should you chose to align with soy.  However, if you choose to align with Paraffin, I’m sure you will have no problems finding a beautiful candle of your chosen.  As with everything, the choice is yours.

Kayorcee Creations Natural Handcrafted Soaps and their ingredients

Natural soap is a treat for the skin that can only truly be appreciated upon use, touch and smell.  There are so may factors that go into the making of a natural bar of soap.  The crafts person should have a particular goal for creating the soap with the ingredients used.  I have tried many different recipes for my soaps for many different reasons and result producing treatments for the skin.  However, I have created a basic recipe that all of my soaps start with.  I have chosen these ingredients for the benefits they impart to the soap as well as to your skin.

Coconut oil

This oil is very beneficial in making soap.  It is the back bone in the cleansing department.  It will provide the clean feeling that you want from a bar of soap.  In addition, it also help to create lather.  Everyone like lots of bubbles in their soap.  A low lathering soap is a real disappointment to most people.  With the right amount of coconut oil lather will be up front and center.  Finally, coconut oils make for a hard bar of soap.  Although this isn’t as beneficial to the skin, it is definitely beneficial to the wallet.  A hard bar of soap will last longer and provide for more number of baths and showers before reinvesting.

Olive Oil

This oil is one of the most common oils used in soap making.  Castile soap is make completely of olive oil and is a great soap.  There are many qualities to Olive oil that I like for my soaps.  Olive oil I thought to help with skin cell regeneration.  It is also acts like a humectant by drawing moisture from the air to the skin.  It also act as a sealant for the skin by holding in the moisture with out clogging the skin’s pores.  Olive oil also help to produce a conditioning stable later.  Lastly, Olive oil is mild and very good for sensitive skin.

Palm Oil

This oil is yet another ingredient that contributes to the hardness and lathering ability of the soap.  In addition, palm oil is a natural anti-oxidant which is incredibly beneficial to skin health.

Castor Oil

This oil act as a humectant by drawing moisture from the air and in to the skin.  Castor oil is easily absorbed in to the skin which softens and conditions the skin layers .

These four ingredients are the base for each of our soaps.  Of course we put some extra love into each bar to make sure it is Kayorcee Creation ready for the people we care most about, our customers, family and friends.

Kayorcee Creations and Our Natural Philosophy

Kayorcee Creations was created out of sheer necessity.  About 10 years ago, due to an illness, I started thinking about the things in my environment as they personally related to me and my family.  I specifically mention the pure selfishness of this thought process, because it’s true.  I was not an eco-friendly world citizen.  Recycle?  That word had no meaning to me at the time.  Chemical free products?  I waved that off with a flip of my wrist indicating my thought process on the subject was done.  Yes, I was indeed flippant with regard to the subject of natural living.  However, as I mentioned, when I became ill with a respiratory infection from over-cleaning my house, my whole outlook on the issue changed drastically.

I am not a middle of the road type of person.  I have nothing against this type of living, but I know I don’t fall into this category.  If I am going to do something, I am going to do it big, or at least I will try.  I made the decision that my house was going to be a chemical free zone.   Well… as much as I could make it chemical free.  I immediately threw away all of my cleaning products and embraced a more natural way of cleaning my home.  Vinegar was a miracle worker.  It didn’t smell as good as my other products, but that was the cost of my new life change.  Once I had a nice grasp on how to clean my home without chemicals, I started thinking about how my family and I were cleaning our bodies.

Growing up, as well as in my adult life, I had suffered with skin irritations, dryness and those pesky facial blackheads and blemishes.  I never had a full blown skin diagnosis, but it was still a problem for me.  As I watched my children grown, I noticed that they too had these issues with their skin.  My son’s skin, which is a nice milk chocolate brown, was often a gray color due to the amount of ash on just about his entire body.  Lotion was just a temporary fix that typically didn’t last more than 2 or 3 hours.  My next recourse was to slather petroleum jelly on his body.  He hated that, but that was what I knew to do at the time.  My daughter’s and my husband’s skin was not that much better than my son’s skin.  In retrospect, I feel foolish for not recognizing the problem that we were all suffering from.  But we are past that now, due to my new found relationship with the natural.

As I stated earlier, I am not a middle of the road type of person and my entry into the natural beauty realm is event of this.  I knew we had to get rid of the things that we were using to clean our bodies, but I knew if I threw out all of our hygiene products my family would revolt against me.  This time I had to take things a little bit slower.  I started making all of our products a little at a time.  All of us started seeing results almost instantly.  Our skin wasn’t nearly as dry and the use of lotion, although very much present from simple habit, was scaled down dramatically.  I no longer worried about my son being teased during gym class because of his chalky white legs.  I was getting so many complements on my skin that I start giving the stuff away to my friends and family.  Then they started making requests and offering me money for what I thought had no value except to my family and I.

Being in the natural beauty business has been so  much fun and rewarding.  I love seeing the changes in my customers skin after they try their first bottle of natural lotion or first bar of handcrafted soap.  I have embraced my business, but to be honest it is hard to look at Kayorcee Creations as simply a business because I am having the time of my life.

Kayorcee Creation’s motto is “Naturally Beautiful”.  I choose this motto because I have never felt more beautiful in my life, and I know it is thanks to natural products.
